5 Benefits of the Almighty RT (Retweet)

1 1 trans 5 Benefits of the Almighty RT (Retweet)What’s the quickest way to get your business noticed on Twitter? Is it  the reckless mention day of #FollowFriday? Or how about through direct messaging? The answer is neither.  If you really want to be viewed as a provider of value on Twitter, the Retweet (RT) is second to none.

I tried researching the RT to give you some awesome stats about its origination, but I was unable to find any (if you have any, please leave them in the comment section). However, I was able to find some helpful stats in an article titled “Introducing the Retweetability Index” by Dan Zarella. In this article, Dan identifies three major areas that Twitter users can use as leverage to increase the number of RT they receive:

-Followers
-Tweeting Volume
-Contagiousness of Content

In my opinion, all three of those factors need to be leveraged in order to get a proper amount of RT’s from your following.

Now, lets take a look at the importance of the RT and 5 different ways that it can affect your business in a positive way:

1. RT’s can go viral: A tweet that has been RT’d a few times dramatically increases the chance of your message going viral. This dramatically increases your reach within the Twitter community, and possibly beyond.

2. RT’s increase visibility within other people’s networks: When people see the letters “RT” while tweeting, their eyes are drawn to them. This is likely to increase the followers curiosity, thus increasing the odds of your message being read.

3. RT’s can help you increase your following: When a tweet is RT’d, the retweeter’s following now sees your tweets. This goes a long way toward building your clout, as well as increases the chances of adding new followers.

4. RT’s increases your credibility: When people notice that you’re consistently being retweeted, you begin to become viewed as a  source of value on that particular topic. Now when your tweeps see your tweets,  they’re much more likely to take a second and check them out.

5. RT’s can open up conversations and form new relationships: After someone has RT’d you, it’s proper Twitter(and human being) etiquette to thank them. This opens the door for conversation that could potentially turn into an online friendship down the road.

If you want to know if your Twitter campaign is on track, keep an eye on how often your tweets are being retweeted. If you’re not seeing ‘RT’ next to your stuff on a regular basis, it may be time to make some changes in your approach to Twitter.  The lucrative impact a successful Twitter campaign will have on your business it too valuable not to.

I mostly RT when I believe the Value will be to my Followers & not just of Interest to Me.
I have RTed others that are also competing for my Market but I Figure, again My Followers may be able to use this info also, even though my service is noncompete. I would hope they think just as kindly of me.
Thanks again for a Great post.
It is Always My pleasure to RT you!

    @Alina,
5 Stars for the awesome post. This is why I love the internet and online marketing. The mentality is a lot different. It is about helping each other out. I know a lot of industry people (with some in direct competition). The great part is we help each other out all of the time and never think twice about it. Thank you for you kind words. Let us know if you need anything.-David

I’m a major retweeter. It has led to being followed by Sir Richard Branson, Kelsey Grammer, Chris Brogan, Guy Kawasaki and hurndreds of cool Twits. Great article and Dan Zarella is also one I follow… http://www.twitter.com/nachase

Great post. :-) For me, RTing is a great way to meet and maintain connections with great tweeps! I’ve got a wicked sense of humor and I try to share that with others…after all it’s not just about driving business, but building relationships! It also shows the human side of your business. I also try to RT information that all people can appreciate and apply to their lives on a daily basis (that includes their personal and work/business side). There are some real gems out there, and it would be a shame if they were not seen.
